6b. ESPLANADE AVENUE AND THE WORLD OF TRADE

View of Esplanade Avenue from Royal Street. J. B. Soubiran Grocery Store’s sign says, “only general depot of leeches.” Several buildings have ironwork balconies and galleries. Wooden fences and streetlights are visible, and the street is unpaved.

DIRECTIONS TO EXCHANGE ALLEY:

Continue walking through the French Quarter on Royal Street toward Canal Street. After you’ve gone ten blocks from Esplanade Avenue, turn left on Conti Street, toward the river. Walk half a block, until you see a narrow pedestrian street known as Exchange Alley on your right. As you make your way to Exchange Alley, you can listen to two more sections of the tour.
